50cl Water To Go Bottle Review
Are you looking for a water filter water bottle? Well keep reading to find out why I think the Water to Go filter water bottle is the best option.
You know when a thought won’t go away?
Well when I was in Jordan we were told not to drink the tap water because the stuff in it could build up in your kidneys and give you kidney stones. It got me thinking about the water I drink every day in London – which is very hard, and leaves calcium scales floating in my tea.
Read on to see the solution I found – it’s affordable and portable!

Back in London this kind of haunted me. Every time I boiled the kettle, got a glass of water, boiled my potatoes. I thought about kidney stones. Now let’s be honest, the list of people with “pass a kidney stone” on their bucket list is probably quite short. Certainly isn’t on mine.So I went and bought a water purifier jug (well, a couple to find one I didn’t hate), and we remember (most) of the time to use water through that jug.
But I was bored of waiting fifteen minutes for the jug to filter enough water to fill up my bottle to go to the gym, so I’d forget and end up buying one there. Or to take with me when I went into London, so I’d end up buying one there. And what about when we go travelling long term – there’s two of us, so two bottles each a day (at best), for at least 4 months out of every year. That’s 480 bottles – AT BEST every year, and that’s if we only buy them during summer.
I don’t want that on me. Especially considering that a lot of the countries we plan on travelling in have little to no recycling infrastructure.
Its also about £500 that would be way better spent on amazing food and experiences.
So I started to look for a water filter water bottle.
I found lots of options. Plenty. I was spoiled for choice. But none of them were right.
They were big – counter top water purification bottles. Too specialized – in line hydration pack purifiers. Or just too expensive for us – basically all of them. But then, I took five minutes out of my day to speak to the people with Just a Drop at a conference in London. Just a Drop are an amazing charity who work at a grass roots level to help communities access sustainable safe water and you should check them out too.
They were selling these cool bottles.
And here we are, welcome to my Water To Go Review

What Does the Water To Go Filter Water Bottle ACTUALLY filter out?
So a big issue for me when searching for a filter water bottle was finding one that actually filters out the stuff that matters to me. Some do bacteria, some do viruses, few do both. Some do taste, some don’t.
The 3 in 1 filter in the Water To Go bottle does both and way more. Water purification bottle technology used to rely almost solely on carbon filters and iodine/other chemical purifiers which left hideous tastes in your mouth and had other problems. Using mechanical filtration (very small pore size which stops stuff passing though), electrical filtration both closes the pore size even more but also attracts the contaminants like magnet, and activated carbon to filter out more contaminants as well as bad taste and smell.
Though the filter won’t work if you run though isotonic powders, cordials, juices etc. It also isn’t recommended for treating your pee to drink, and won’t work on salt water – because desalination is an insanely difficult thing to do.
Viruses and Bacteria
- Hepatitis A
- Tota Virus
- Virus Botulism
- Vibrio Disease
- Leptospirosis – Weil’s Disease
- Legionella (Legionnaires Disease and PontiacFever)
Parasites and waterborne pathogens
- Fasciolopsiasis Taeniasis– Tapeworm
- Echinococcosis Ascariasis
- Coenorosis Schistosomiasis
- Cryptosporidium Tryonosoma (SleepingSickness)
- Threadworm Guinea Worm
- Hookworm Roundworm
- Pinworm Onchiocerca
- Fasciola Hepatica/Liver fluke
Metals & Chemicals
- Volatile Organic Compounds including Formaldehyde*
* In certain areas of the world natural Arsenic occurs, WTG filters cannot filter Arsenic to 99.
So yeah, the Water To Go filter … well it filters pretty damn well!
A final word on the filtration, Water To Go make all of their testing data available from the three independent labs that tested their filters in the USA, Europe and India.
Egads I just love me some transparency.
Technical explanation of how the Water To Go filter works
Generally a water filter water bottle will use a mechanical filtration as the main method of purifying the water. This works like a fishing net on a micro scale – the pores in the filter are smaller than the particles of the contaminants.
This is the cool one, using nano alumina to decrease the pore size even further and to catch the contaminants more effectively. Nano alumina, or Alumina Nanofibres are very small fibres made from aluminium metal or materials that contain aluminium metal.
When I say very small, I mean extremely small. The fibres range in size from 1-100 nanometers in diameter, and can be a few micrometers in length. For perspective, a sheet of paper is about 100,000 nanometers thick. So… 0.001% the thickness of a piece of paper. So, small.
Nano alumina emit a positive charge when wet and this means that the negatively charged contaminants of protozoa, bacteria and viruses are attracted and caught. Basically electrostatic attraction allows for the potential removal of viruses which are on the submicron and nanoscale.
Activated Carbon Filtration
Carbon filter pores are too large to stop anything like protozoa, bacteria, or viruses but they do filter out sediment, chlorine, and some heavy metals. This means that the flavour and odour are significantly improved. However, traditional activated carbon filtration systems lose as much as 70% of their area (and therefore efficiency) to the adhesives needed to keep them together. Water To Go, however, incorporates it into the membrane making it way more efficient and compact.
Having a 3 in 1 filter system like this greatly enhances the Water To Go bottle and its ability to be a fantastic all rounder –not only are you getting water that tastes good but you’re also getting water that is safe.
First Impressions of the Water To Go Filter Water Bottle
My first thought when I picked up the Water To Go Bottle was how sturdy it felt, the bottle itself is really light but it doesn’t feel flimsy. I also liked how well it fit in my hand, because I got iddy bitty little hands, and I can actually hold on to it with some kind of confidence!
I’ll also be way honest here – I was drawn in by the colour ok, turquoise is like, my new thing. I’m a red and black and silver girl usually, but hit me recently with that burning hot blue and ya girl is sold.
Water To Go Bottle Run/Gym Test
I figured I’d take this running and assumed I wouldn’t like it because I am NOT big on running with water bottles, but… I didn’t? I think it has a lot to do with how well the bottle fits into my hand. You DO have to pull on the straw to get the water through. So if you’re running at full pace it could be more difficult than you want it to be, but at the same time I’ve never been running at full speed and been able to even think about drinking water while running that hard. So while this isn’t a squeeze-it-and-it-fires-at-your-face running montage bottle, it’ll do the hydration job.
I go to the gym regularly (…when I remember) and the one thing that has driven me up the wall with bottles I have used in the past is that they don’t fit in the damn holders on the damn machines. Y U MAKE A GYM BOTTLE THAT DOESN’T FIT STANDARD GYM EQUIPMENT!? Thankfully for my sanity, the Water To Go filter water bottle fits in all of the machines I use.
Water To Go Bottle Pros:
- The filtration. Duh. Its as much as anyone is realistically going to need.
- The size – amazing bottle size for a good half liter payoff. My partner in particular would like the larger size, because he has longer between refill opportunities in the day but for me the handful is perfect.
- The price. At the time of review the Go! 50cl bottle cost £14.99. Now this might seem like some kind of expensive – and as compared to a normal water bottle, yes – it is more expensive. But without going into a full water bottle comparison – generally filter water bottles range from £40 to £65,and many of these options don’t filter out as much different stuff as the Water To Go Filter water bottle.

Furthermore the filters last 2 months – or 130 liters of water. The replacement filters cost £9.99 each, but you can also buy 1 years supply of filters for £39.99. This means you’ll be spending, essentially, between £4.99 and £3.33 a month on your filter water bottle. Basically, when a 500ml bottle of water costs £1.25 at a coffee shop you only need to use your Water To Go filter water bottle 4 times to outweigh the monetary costs completely.

Cons of the Water To Go Filter Bottle
- You do need to pull kinda strong to get the water out– but its not *difficult* and it’s a small price to pay.
- If you hold the thing vertical to drink from, you do get a tiny bit of leaking. But I haven’t noticed leaks at any other time.
Water To Go Review General Thoughts
I love this bottle for several reasons, not just that it works well and looks cool but also because the company is transparent (as in, they publish the data from their testing and don’t expect you to just accept the numbers they give you), they help support charities, and they also go the extra mile to make sure their product is actually useful to the people they’retrying to help!
Water to Go filter water bottles are (probably) the first ever water bottle to be Halal certified – why does that matter you may ask. WELL. Because Halal isn’t just about pork and other food products. Many things that you wouldn’t think of are based from animal products, or tested on animals which goes against the Islamic teachings of kindness towards animals.
This is PARTICULARLY important in the case for Water To Go and water charities, as much of the world that is most heavily impacted by not having clean water is heavily populated by those of the Islamic faith.
Additionally, through their testing for halal certification Water To Go has documented that they use no animal or animal by-products – which also makes them a vegan option.
I also love the application of technology, revolutionary processes like the use of nano alumina to filter water is just so exciting to me (yes I’m a nerd, I know).
Overall, I think this is a great company am I am thrilled to talk about them, discuss their products, and of course provide y’all with a discount code!
